How to Try (and Enjoy!) Anal Sex

It’s no question that there’s been a huge uptick over the past few years in the discussion of all things anal in mainstream media: anal sex, anal toys, anal masturbation, pegging, etc. With that said though, I still feel like there’s a stigma around personally doing and enjoying anal. For a long time, that mentality made me dance around the conundrum of whether or not I should ever give anal a try.

Well, now I’m writing a 101 anal sex guide so you can guess my resolution.

Enjoy anal sex no matter who you are

I wouldn’t say I’m the master or a connoisseur of anal, but I do enjoy the extra stimulation every now and then when I’m in the mood. I’ve found that a great place to start is self-love with anal toys. This way, you get a better understanding of your own body’s workings and preferences that you can extend to a partner when/if you’re ready. So, for anyone interested in dabbling in anal sex and looking for a quick, beginner anal guide, welcome!

Your Quick Guide to Great, Comfortable Anal

1. There might be poop, but probably not.

Listen, I get that poop might not be in your definition of sexy romance, but yeah, you’re playing with the transportation method of poop, so it might happen. Big deal. Surprisingly though, it doesn’t happen as much as you’d expect. Be aware of the digestive timing of your body to gauge and you should be okay.

I love using this image for all my anal articles relating to lube. Cracks me up every time.

2. Always use lubricant.

Lots of lube. I recommend thick water based lubes for low mess and easy clean-up like Sliquid Naturals Sassy Lubricating Gel. Especially with the Lioness vibrator, we strongly recommend water-based lubricants to make sure it safely works with the sensors. You can find my guide here for best anal lubes for other toys, people, or hands, you can use as well.

3. Make sure whatever you’re inserting has a stopper at the end.

Butt plugs, anal sex toys, and anal beads have a “stopper”, flared base, designed at the end of the toy so that the entire toy does not end up inside your anus and you have to make a mortifying trip to the emergency room. This makes rabbit vibrators, like the Lioness, safe to use anally since the clitoral nub acts as a stopper. Rejoice.

This sloth knows that slow is the way to go.

4. Start small & slow.

The anus can need some relaxation and stretching. Don’t force anything that feels too large or painful. Instead, you can start with smaller things, like butt plugs or a CLEAN finger, and give it a few minutes to help stretch out your anus before trying something larger.

5. Don’t cross contaminate, condoms are friends.

Make sure whatever you put in your butthole, don’t put it in a vagina unless you thoroughly wash and disinfect. If in doubt, condoms are always great ways to ensure safe fun.

6. The anus loves to absorb things into the bloodstream.

I wrote an article about using THC lube and how it was the best orgasm of my life. Since then, I get a lot of questions about if they can use weed lube anally. The answer is yes, but the anal tissues are very absorbent, and the THC WILL enter your bloodstream and make you high. Same goes for anything else you put in your anus.

Before we get started, what's your safe word?

7. No ALWAYS means NO.

Whether this happens pre or during, verbal or non-verbal, a yes that turns into a no, respect yourself and your partners and listen closely for cues. Stop everything if you’re cued to do so.

8. It’s all normal.

It’s totally normal and okay if you love anal, it’s totally normal and okay if you don’t like it, it’s totally normal and okay if you don’t ever want to try it. Being comfortable and understanding your body is the most important thing.

Hey, beautiful!

With all that said, I'll leave you all with the ultimate golden rule that can be applied to anal and every other sex act: no matter the sexual activity, practice self-love to get a deep understanding of your boundaries and comfort levels. Give yourself the permission to explore your own body! This, more than any other sex tip, will improve your sexual health, sex life, and help you feel good!
